Similar patterns of behavior between the fake Morrissey and UpThePier/TheRatsBack.

To further bolster the arguments of the last post, one should note that the moment that activity on the MW blog ceases entirely, so has activity from TheRatsBack, who is now going by one of his other aliases, UpThePier.

Other similarities in their actions:

-MorrisseysWorld initially didn't return any communication on Twitter.
Around the time MW decided to become more communicative, so did TRB/UpThePier.

-MorrisseysWorld initially didn't follow any of his followers until it was announced on the blog he would accept follow requests. TRB/UpThePier behaved likewise: MW followers have reported he'd follow other MW followers to get their attention, and as soon as they followed him, he unfollowed. Suddenly, as MW began taking followers, he began following his followers back.

-In the last week of March 2012, TRB/UpThePier announced he was "going on holiday" and may not return. His last tweet was on March 30. As to be expected, MorrisseysWorld tweeted regularly until April 2 and has since fallen silent.

How TheRatsBack (real name Duncan Barkes?) was outed as the owner of MorrisseysWorld and more.

We've finally heard back from @sweetestflower, who is claiming to be Morrissey. His story:

-He went onto the Morrissey's World website last week.
-TheRatsBack, the only person in the chat, left as soon as @sweetestflower logged in with the name "Morrissey".
-Less than five seconds later, someone by the name of "cleaner" appeared and posted dozens of messages in less than a minute to clear out the remnants of an older conversation TheRatsBack had been having in the chat. All the "cleaner" messages simply contained a full stop.
-"cleaner" left and "TheQueen" appeared.
-"Morrissey" tried to leave a message in the chat and found he was banned.

With TheRatsBack, under the guise of cleaner/TheQueen, being the only other person present, he concluded TheRatsBack is the owner of MorrisseysWorld, independently confirming what other people have suspected for months.

The question arises: why did TheRatsBack wipe out the chat log the minute "Morrissey" appeared and then banned him from speaking? Wiping out the chat log suggests he didn't want the real Morrissey (even if @sweetestflower isn't the real Morrissey) to see what he'd said, but then forbidding him from leaving a comment suggests he holds some kind of grudge against him. Did TheRatsBack create MorrisseysWorld because of some vendetta against the former Smiths frontman?

Duncan Barkes had expressed a year ago his desire to interview Moz but he refused, which is why he had to settle for Dickie Felton, who has met Moz on several occasions. If TheRatsBack is Duncan Barkes, did he steal aspects of Dickie Felton's personality to cover his own identity to gain Morrissey's attention? What better way, in his mind, for him to do that than to take on the identity of a high profile superfan who Moz liked in order to pimp MorrisseysWorld? Morrissey would then be directed there and gain his attention or ire, as he intended.

So is it Duncan? Revisited.

It must be noted that TheRatsBack stated last week that he is going on vacation this week: incidentally Duncan Barkes has started a new radio program weeknights from 1am-4am. A "vacation" would be the perfect cover for acclimating oneself to a graveyard shift.

Barkes works at LBC in Covent Gardens, London. One of the first hits to this blog was from Covent Gardens moments after it went live. TheRatsBack made it known he had already visited this blog by the time the Covent Gardens visit had been recorded, one of the first four to this site.

We're attempting to contact "@sweetestflower" for more details. Please check back later.

Duncan Barkes is Morrissey's World.

In the past week another Twitter account claiming to be Morrissey has appeared. Whether or not that person really is the Smiths front man or not, the person inadvertently ended up discovering who is behind Morrissey's World, and unfortunately there are no surprises here.

The person "@sweetestflower" on Twitter went onto the Morrissey's World website and saw TheRatsBack (an alias of Duncan Barkes) in the chat room at the bottom of the screen. TheRatsBack promptly left and a few seconds later the person claiming to be Morrissey was banned from posting in the chat. On blogspot, only the owner of a blog or chat module are allowed to ban people from posting.

As there was no one else in the chat room at the time, TheRatsBack proved ipso facto that he is the owner of the Morrissey's World blog.

Case closed.

Characteristics Shared Between TheRatsBack and Duncan Barkes.

Working in tandem with a gumshoe or two, the owners of Who Is Morrissey's World? are focusing on LBC broadcaster Duncan Barkes as the owner of TheRatsBack twitter and blogger accounts, and possibly MorrisseysWorld. It is becoming increasingly more likely that Mr. Barkes has taken on several personality traits of his former interviewee, Dickie Felton, in an attempt to obscure his identity.

Characteristics shared between TRB and Duncan Barkes:

-they work in radio.
-have business on the Isle of Wight or in its vicinity.
-have conservative views on immigration and race relations.
-same writing style: compare TRB's blog and an excerpt from this article that omits articles and subjects from the beginning of sentences and independent clauses, and the sudden turn from a serious tone to a frivolous one:

A vegetarian expert I once interviewed informed me that veggies have better sex, as meat contains some substance that makes the nerve endings less sensitive. Be that as it may, whenever I talk to vegetarians they never seem terribly happy. Conversation quickly turns to how they miss bacon sandwiches, and how only last week they fell off the meatless wagon; ‘accidentally’ eating a kebab on the way home from the pub. And if they really are getting more than their fair share of hanky panky, then they aren’t boasting about it.

Is broadcaster Duncan Barkes impersonating Dickie Felton?

Based on a tip from Kevin aka @banjaxer on Twitter.

In January 2011 Liverpudlian broadcaster and Morrissey fan interviewed Dickie Felton on his show regarding the publication of Felton's Morrissey book. Approximately 6 months later, TheRatsBack makes his first appearance. @banjaxer is now amusingly intimating that Barkes and TheRatsBack had never been seen in the same room together.

Some common points between Barkes and Felton in relation to TRB:

-They are both in the radio industry.
-They both want to get into writing more. While Felton has published a book he does not make a living off his writing; Barkes has a writing background but is hoping to also write a book. Recall that TRB had stated he intended to begin his career as a writer in January 2012.

-Barkes is a more prestigious radio person than Felton, making him a more likely candidate for a Sony Gold award. His colleagues have won Sony Golds in the past. However, one would assume that had Barkes won one, it would be in his biography blurbs.

Little is to be found on the web of Barkes' Morrissey fandom, however. The distinct trait of believing Morrissey is sending secret messages to oneself in song is something that still remains unique between TRB and Felton; is Barkes taking parts of Felton's beliefs to obscure his identity and/or perhaps implicitly misdirect astute observers to think that he is Felton? Or considering the evidence presented below, is Felton still the more likely candidate for TRB?

To be continued...

The imposter theory.

Given the uncanny points of similarity between TheRatsBack and Dickie Felton, we may whittle the matter down to two possible avenues:

-TheRatsBack is Dickie Felton.

-Someone is assuming parts of Felton's identity, many of which are highly unique (his radio career, his presence at the Gt Yarmouth gig, his belief that Morrissey sends him cryptic messages in song, his peculiar Morrissey nicknames, etc).

We argue that if this second scenario is true, the motives for such an impersonation are likely malicious and not playful in nature, for it's unclear why Felton would be a target when there are other Morrissey fans and authors more well known than him. Some have pointed out that Felton at a superficial glance seems unlike the kind to engage in TheRatsBack's patterns of behaviour.

Is Morrissey sending one fan secret messages?

Dickie Felton is thought by some, including people close to the real Morrissey, to be the person known as TheRatsBack on Twitter and whose blog is "Following The Mozziah". As mentioned in the posts on Felton below, he is convinced that Morrissey sends him secret messages when performing live.

Here is Felton mentioning this delusion on his blog. Note this post is dated February 2010.

Here is TRB mentioning the same delusion on his blog.

And here is Morrissey's World giving a shout out to TRB on the blog. This message appeared around the time TRB began to claim the above, that Morrissey was singing "Ratty", not "Fatty", pointing other fans in the direction of a particular live recording. Curiously, no one else heard "Ratty".

While it's probable that TRB is Dickie Felton and since it's unlikely that Morrissey would send secret messages to one fan above any other (Julia Riley is arguably the biggest Morrissey fan and as far as it is known does not send messages to her in song), several questions arise:

-Is Dickie Felton also MW? This would be in line with TRB's numerous identities. Is this one big smoke and mirrors game where Felton pretends to be a fantasy version of his idol that sends secret messages to his fans, primarily himself? Felton's secret messages claim predate TRB's alleged discovery of MW.

-Or is Marcus Markou MW? Since Markou's preoccupation is with virtual worlds and satirical fantasy lives, could Markou be both MW and TRB, basing TRB's identity off of Felton's identity? (Since Felton is a high profile Morrissey fan in the UK, he would have come across him via the media or Morrissey fan sites.)

-Did Dickie Felton and Marcus Markou know one another before meeting at Markou's film test screening? Could they be pulling this sick joke on Morrissey's fans together?

-Or is Markou duping Felton like everyone else, playing it up for TRB with the Ratty comments on the MW blog?

Marcus Markou

Marcus Markou popped up in the MW saga out of the blue in early 2012. An unknown playwright, within weeks of befriending TRB on Twitter, he invited TRB to his film's test screening. TRB is otherwise highly duplicitous and deceitful in regards to his identity: why would he readily meet Markou when he won't give anyone else even his first name?

Keep in mind as you read the below quotes that Morrissey's World is often touted by its author as an online satirical Morrissey website and Twitter where this fake Morrissey gets to interact with Morrissey's real fans.

Here are descriptions of Markou's plays from his Wikipedia page:

"Age-Sex-Location, his play about chat rooms and virtual worlds,"

A review of another play, Ordinary Worlds:

"A bourgeois sitcom with a macabre heart and a central character who responds to stress by indulging in a satirical dream-life".

Is MW a free experiment for Markou to study human behavior for a future project?

Markou in an interview:
"If we could dramatise journalistic pieces, why not emails, chat rooms and websites?

"Richard and I worked on the script together for a year, researching the Internet and developing the characters."

Dickie Felton

Dickie Felton is the author of the self-published book "The Day I Met Morrissey" and a self-described Morrissey obsessive. He has been brought up as the likely identity of TheRatsBack. Some evidence in support of this theory includes:

-Felton was at the same Great Yarmouth Pier gig as TRB. Like TRB, he has an esoteric and otherwise unheard of obsession with that day. Felton not only lept onto the stage (as TRB has said he did) but met Morrissey on the pier.

-When he tells the story of when he met Morrissey he says he was walking "down the pier". One of TRB's twitter aliases is "UpThePier".

Read interview here

-Like TRB, he worked in radio.

-As TRB refers to Morrissey as the Mozziah, Felton consistently refers to him as the Mozfather. And like TRB, he always refers to Morrissey fandom in religious terms. From the interview above, Felton says: "For some disciples meeting Morrissey is like a religious experience."

-And just like TRB, Felton claims that Morrissey speaks to him via 'secret messages' in song. (In fact, TRB's entire belief that MW is Morrissey is via these kinds of secret messages.) While the above similarities may be written off as coincidence, this similarity is highly unusual if not unique, making for a very convincing argument that Felton is TRB.

-There is a user on twitter named certifiabletoe with only 8 followers, 6 of whom are people who follow MW. One of the two exceptions is Dickie Felton. How did Dickie Felton's official twitter end up in the fold? Dickie Felton has, to our knowledge, never acknowledged the MW saga, which is unbelievable since he, by his own account, lives and breathes Morrissey and is on twitter frequently.

- certifiable toe has the following traits: like TRB, certifiabletoe is bigoted against non-white ethnic groups. Like Felton he is a Liverpool supporter. (One MW follower has noted that TRB is disappointed when Liverpool does not win.) Felton on the other hand has not made his views on multiculturalism known; strangely, he has a BA in Race Relations, making the topic one he is at least interested in.

So considering that Dickie Felton is one of the eight people certifiabletoe follows on Twitter, why does he send Dickie racist tweets? It's random for someone to send tweets of this nature if he did not have some prior connection to the recipient. And if this is not so, why choose Felton and not any of the MW followers? It must be noted these disgusting comments came two weeks after MW joked about Whitney Houston's death in a manner many thought was racist. TheRatsBack not only defended MW but also made comments on racial matters on his own blog that upset some.

Below certifiable alleges he was arrested for singing "National Front Disco", which is hard to believe. Note the racial slur, the use of which TRB has thought of trivially in the past.

Here are 6 of the 8 people certifiabletoe follows.

TheRatsBack

TheRatsBack has been touted among many people as the author of Morrissey's World. Some facts on TRB:

-He writes a daily blog obsessively combing over every occurrence on MW's blog and twitter. Other posts include imaginary conversations between him and a therapist about having a Morrissey obsession.

-He's fixated on Morrissey's May 2009 performance at Great Yarmouth Pier, where he claims he jumped on stage and grabbed Morrissey's leg.

-He is notorious for having multiple identities on both the blog and Twitter. His other names include: UpThePier (in reference to the venue where he grabbed Morrissey's leg), and JodyRoad. There are likely many more.

-He used to work in radio.

-He holds racist views about British immigration:

-He always refers to Morrissey in messianic terms, 'The Mozziah'. He never calls him Morrissey.

-He claims to be associated with the Isle of Wight, though as his various twitter accounts suggest, he frequently fabricates personal details about himself such as location. JodyRoad was supposedly in Illinois, USA.

-He may be dyslexic.

-He wants to be a writer, and alluded to working to start his career as one in January 2012, even though making a living as a writer on such short notice is virtually impossible.

TRB's poor writing skills are perhaps the greatest argument against him being behind MW. While the quality of writing on MW once held depth, many think it has declined in recent months; despite this, many people believe TRB to be incapable of writing MW. The alternative theory is that TRB's grammatical and spelling mistakes are deliberate, so that he may cover his identity and seem less verbose than he really is.

The next post is devoted to Morrissey fan Dickie Felton, who some believe is TheRatsBack. Certainly, if TRB is Dickie Felton, and the odds seem to be high given the match up of information, one must consider that Dickie Felton seemingly has no grammar or spelling problems.

Some facts about Morrissey's World.

For those not familiar with the situation, an outline of some facts:

-Morrissey's World began blogging in 2009, but of all the fans who are aware of the blog, most discovered it in August-September of 2011. The person who runs the blog also has a Twitter account.

-Morrissey has declared on True-To-You four times since that the MW blog is not his. In the most recent instance, as of this writing, he says the blog is "dangerous" and "has caused me problems". Out of respect for him, one must conclude he is being sincere.

-Someone who goes by the name of "TheRatsBack" on his blog and on Twitter obsessively follows every occurrence related to MW, including the number of new Twitter followers he has, the identities of other people who communicate with MW, and the comments they make. TheRatsBack is highly secretive about his identity.

-MW has promised on numerous occasions to prove he is Morrissey via a series of 'predictions' and 'signs', most of which never come true. The few that do may be attributed to cold reading, a common technique of fraudulent psychics: in this case, many of the 'signs' are actually predictable gestures that Morrissey has made on stage for years.

-In late 2011, MW finally admitted the blog and Twitter were parodies, yet people continued to believe this was a 'sign', believing Morrissey's official denouncements of the blog were proof it was him.

-MW once tweeted while Morrissey was on stage in South America, disproving it is him. However, the possibility remains the person impersonating him somehow knows him.

This blog attempts to shine a light on some probable suspects.
